Situated in a panoramic position on the top of a hill overlooking the sea, Populonia was one of the most important Etruscan cities and still today preserves numerous testimonies of this people.
From Populonia you can enjoy a wonderful view of the underlying gulf of Baratti , the city of Piombino and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Given this strategic position in the Middle Ages, the Appiano princes built the Rocca , a fortress, still present today and open to the public, from which a large stretch of sea could be monitored. The village of Populonia Alta then developed around the tower with a tangle of alleys, streets and panoramic squares.
The most famous historical remains of the village, however, are the Etruscan necropolis protected within the Archaeological Park . In this green area, numerous tombs dating back to different eras have come back to light. Some were carved directly into the rock, others underground. The latter are easily recognizable by the particular shape reminiscent of a hill.
Descending from the village along the panoramic road that runs along the sea, you arrive directly at the beach . Here there are numerous spas and clubs for nightlife.
